(At Home) A Million Miles (From Home) – (Never) Up In The Air (Even Up In The Air) – IMRAN®

(At Home) A Million Miles (From Home) – (Never) Up In The Air (Even Up In The Air) – IMRAN®

I’ve officially crossed the million-mile mark with Delta Air Lines. The account summary today shows 955,805 miles, but I had redeemed 60,000 miles for a trip a few years ago.
My most recent roundtrip—Tampa to LaGuardia/JFK and back—pushed me past the million-mile threshold. I’ve been a Delta SkyMiles member since 1989, and every mile tells a story—from business breakthroughs to personal journeys across the globe.
This doesn’t even include the half a million miles I had with Northwest Airlines. Sadly, I lost those because I didn’t find the old paper ticket coupons until decades after Delta had taken over the airline.
It also doesn’t include my half a million miles on Pakistan International Airlines. I became the first in my family to fly at age 7—more than 55 years ago. I stopped flying PIA about a decade ago when it went from being one of the world’s great airlines to one of its most dangerous white elephants (though still better than Air India and similar carriers).
This is more than just my love for travel. It’s about loyalty, longevity, and living life fully—one mile, one flight, one day at a time.

Fun Fabulous France,Spring Sunset Shades, Paris Places Perspective (April 21, 2018) - IMRAN®

Fun Fabulous France,Spring Sunset Shades, Paris Places Perspective (April 21, 2018) - IMRAN®
It was mid-spring in Paris, and the city was bathed in the kind of light photographers dream about. At a quarter past eight, as the sun dipped toward the horizon, I stood atop the Arc de Triomphe watching the golden hour unfold across the city.
In the foreground, the slender spire of Église Saint-François-Xavier pierced the skyline, its silhouette etched in gold against the evening sky. A quiet but commanding presence, it stood as a reminder of the city’s spiritual and architectural depth.
Just beyond it, Les Invalides gleamed, its dome catching the sunset’s last rays and glowing like polished gold. Beneath that brilliance lies Napoleon Bonaparte, but in that moment, the monument felt alive—radiating history.
Far off, the Montparnasse Tower rose above the skyline, its modern silhouette softened by the amber light. Often seen as a break from tradition, tonight it looked almost poetic—like even the future was willing to bask in the past.
And beneath me, the Arc de Triomphe itself—my perch and Paris’s proud sentinel. Built to honor those who fought for France, it offered a view that stitched centuries together in one radiant sweep. That evening, Paris didn’t just whisper its story—it sang it in gold.

Blue Hour Manhattan Plaza 33 Ping Pong Tables Across From Macy's Herald Square - IMRAN®

Blue Hour Manhattan Plaza 33 Ping Pong Tables Across From Macy's Herald Square - IMRAN®

Manhattan, New York City, has been my "first and forever" hometown since my first visit in 1987 and living there since January 1989l. I have always loved driving (and even keeping a car) in the city.

But I also love European cities' open spaces for pedestrians. It is interesting to see how much of Times Square, and now also Herald Square, where Macy's flagship store is, are being given more space for people to do city living. I loved seeing these table tennis "tables" (appropriately fully locked into the concrete."

I will have to play with a friend there one day. Enjoy this view of blue hour in the city at the center of the universe.  This was captured at a rare moment of no one walking by on June 23, 2022.

Gorgeous Caribbean Waters At George Town, Cayman Islands Rocky Shoreline - IMRAN™

Gorgeous Caribbean Waters At George Town, Cayman Islands Rocky Shoreline - IMRAN™
My then-GF "K" had taken me on a 4th of July holiday weekend trip to the Cayman Islands. It had been planned for my birthday a month or so earlier.
It was summer 2013. It was hot. It was the Caribbean. It was quite beautiful. I do have to admit, the Cayman Islands are not quite as exciting or beautiful to me as the Virgin Islands, or especially places like Eleuthera, also in the Caribbean.
This trip ended up being a lot more drama than it was worth at the time. Fortunately, it accelerated my decision to clear my life of unneeded drama on returning to the USA. However, I savor my great memories.
Regardless of how happy I can be to be rid of a few specific people in my life, I do always cherish the (good) memories and experiences we shared. Life is too short to erase those joyful experiences just because the persons with me at those times were not worthy of being kept next to me.
So, despite the too frequent bursts of drama, and my literally almost taking an early flight home, we did have some good times. We spent a lot of time exploring the shoreline of Grand Cayman.
During a long walk exploring the nooks and crannies off South Church Street, George Town, we found many beautiful spots to make memories, including this magical rocky place. Smith's Barcadere sandy beach was a good place to go snorkeling, as well as swimming in the absolutely stunning blue shades of water that surrounded the area. Very few people were around.
This is an old 3D camera video so the quality is not that great. Unfortunately, there was nothing I could do to block out the irritating background sound. I did not want to kill the full audio of this clip because the sounds of water are always part of the magic of seeing a sea or ocean video. After all, it is just like having to tolerate negative people even during an amazingly positive happy blessed life!

1 Minute Atlantic Ocean Addiction Fix At Fort Lauderdale Florida - IMRAN™
In less than a minute, you can enjoy the beautiful colors that make any ocean, particularly the Atlantic Ocean, especially in Florida, such a powerful and emotive experience. Handheld Nikon D850 DSLR video shot from my 10th-floor hotel room across a wide expanse of sand, roads, and hotel front space, but you can see the footprints in the sand!

Apollo Beach Tampa Bay Florida Jet Ski Racing Sailing Boating Cruising HyperLapse - IMRAN™

I love Florida and I love boating. Combining those two is easy when I am blessed to live in Apollo Beach, on Tampa Bay.
This is a low-resolution (merely 640x480) video saved from a Twitter Livestream, using their Periscope platform. The quality of Periscope videos is much lower than FaceBook's livestreaming quality these days.
But, you can see why this area is a boating paradise for every kind of mariner, See cruise ships, tankers, cargo ships, yachts, sailboats, cruisers, boats, pontoons, jet skis and almost every form of watercraft in this one video.
It is sped up to nearly 500% so a half hour stream can be enjoyed in under 4.5 minutes.
The music track is my nTrance To The Tunnel Of Love, the title album of my music CD that you can listen to on Spotify, Google Play, Microsoft, iTunes, CDbaby, and all major music platforms.
Enjoy. Like, love, comment, share!

Euro Stairway To Heaven - IMRAN™

Thanks to my beautiful beloved companion Shasha for the many awesome photos she took of me during our amazing time together in Berlin, Germany, five years ago.

She took this candid photo by calling out to me as I was going up a staircase to see if this place was worth exploring. I had made this trip to Germany EXACTLY 25 Years after my first visit there.

Last Birthday With Abu - IMRAN™

Last Birthday With Abu - IMRAN™

As a kid I left home in Punjab, Pakistan, to live with my grandmother in Karachi, for a better education. My mother and siblings would visit during the holidays. Dad would sometimes come with them. His work with the irrigation department meant many holiday periods coincided with floods in areas he was responsible for irrigation and safety of rivers, canals, dams, etc. But it also became a family ritual that he would surprise us by taking a flight and coming to see us in Karachi.

Keeping the tradition alive later in Lahore, I would sometimes do the same. But it became even more exciting to be able to surprise my family by showing up in Lahore unannounced while giving the impression I was in New York unable to visit.

Based on Columbia Business School schedules and later pace of life in NY, my attempt was always to go to Pakistan for my birthday, May 23, even though it is brutally hot in summer.

I tried to twice annually. Over time, as my Surprise visits became more predictable, I mixed it up by going for my parents’ birthdays, December 25 & August 22.

After Mom's unexpected death too young on 2/2/1992 I started going on that day too. Since flights from New York to Lahore were on certain days a week, my family expected me to 'surprise' them on those days. I would counter that by traveling from other cities, like Washington, DC, to take a longer flight from there on different day. (Remind me another day to tell you the most surreal travel story of my life that happened in one such trip).

In 2008 I was working in Miami, unaware that a very tough time was coming up.  One of my loves T and I worked at an organization in Miami, where management was trying to do something definitely unethical and self-serving use of state funds meant for children on welfare. I was working as a CIO but on a consultant, not full time employee, basis. I was asked to come on full time. Certain that if I did that and did what I was being asked to sign off on, one day I would be left holding the bag for their shenanigans. So, we parted ways in April 2008.

Abu had been paralyzed by a stroke in 2002 but was otherwise in good health and spirits. I had seen him a few months prior, in a typical short surprise trip. This time I decided to spend more time with him, and managed to surprise them all with my arrival in May.

It was typical hot weather. Because of incompetence and corruption of EVERY ruler in Pakistan, from Sharif to Bhutto to treasonous Army generals, power failures are a daily routine, sometimes for 12-18 hours in some areas!

Even inside the house, it gets hot quickly. You can see the sweat on my face as I had someone take a candid photo with Dad as he was reading a medicine's packaging.

I am so glad I spent two months with him then. I came back to NY in July but then went back to surprise him on his birthday in August. I stayed another two months, not too worried about going back to work in NY, as I had plenty of money saved up and stocks. Little did I know that within months it would all be gone.

Every time I used to bid adieu to my father I always soaked it all in; time and feelings, sights and sounds, love and lifelong bond. One never knows when it is the last time you meet a loved one.

I came back to New York around October. I was going to do a third surprise trip within one year after a long time, for my late Mom's birth date, but Christmas rush meant there were no seats.

As God would will it, Abu passed away unexpectedly, not from the stroke but from the effects of aspirating some food accidentally. Within weeks of that all I had built up over 20 years living and working in America was lost in the economic meltdown of 2009, starting one of the most difficult times of my life, from which in some ways I am still recovering.

But, there is not one thing I would change about the four months of 2008 that I was able to spend with Abu.

Happy Father's Day, Abu, every day, in heaven,

Imran

The Pen… Wait A Sec, The Camera Is Mightier Than The Sword! - IMRAN™

The Pen… Wait A Sec, The Camera Is Mightier Than The Sword! There is so much irony in this photo that Tania took of me...

There is so much irony in this photo that Tania took of me during our trip to Spain.

The incredible and beautiful Islamic influence is visible even today, despite Muslims’ rule having ended there centuries ago. It was wonderful to see that and the equally fascinating later Western art, and the craziness of Dali and others, in Barcelona. One of the fun places to visit was Pla del Palau.

While the news today is of barbarians beheading innocent Muslims, Christians, and non-Muslims around the world supposedly in the name of God, at one time it was Islamic countries, and Muslim societies, that were the centers of art, literature, science, libraries, and many other wonders of civilization.

This photo, taken ten years ago by my then girlfriend Tania, has irony because it is a European Christian soldier character on the streets of Barcelona who is playfully holding me, a Muslim, at the tip of a sword.

I am showing that I will smilingly fight back, although I only have a camera lens (EyeSee 360) to defend myself.

The imagery pen IS mightier than the sword!

Spread Peace and Love, my friends, wherever you go, whoever you meet.

Be/Hold The (Man); The (Super) Human Stain(ed) Glass View - IMRAN™

2012 has gone by in a blur of activity, even as what is likely more than half of my life has rushed by, as time flies, before it is time to meet my maker, at the end of my human life.

Because of the hectic schedule, I have not even been able to add more than one or two pictures here since I had the pleasure of passing the One Million Views mark in August 2012.

I was about to post a gorgeous sunset I captured at home in New York this weekend, when I remember the Stained Glass theme I played with words on, in the previous photo, of a butterfly, the wings of which almost appeared to be made of stained glass.

That reminded me that I had captured some photos deep inside the Köln Dom (Cologne Cathedral) on my arrival there, in Germany, exactly 25 years after my first visit. So, I decided to post a photo from that April-May 2012 trip.

This SOOC (Straight Out Of Camera) photo was simply framed in Photoshop and titled, otherwise, nothing was changed. It is how the Nikon D300 captured the windows of these religious symbols, of such symbolism and significance to many Christians.

I am a Muslim but went to Catholic schools in Pakistan. That is where I studied Shakespeare and was introduced to puns.

The title was based on too many puns that combined wordplay and mixing religious metaphors. Be! A powerful word ascribed to events carried out at the order of a supreme being. Behold the man. A baby Jesus image, likely the mother holding the child, who is to be a man many would follow and behold. Others would later attribute super human, even god like, powers to him.

And it reminded me of the movie with Anthony Hopkins that related to the games genes and mixed parentages can play, The Human Stain, coming full circle to the stained glass view, of great human beings, miraculous events, stained by violence and murder in the name of God, marred by near-idolatry worship of a great man whose message was to erase idolatry, seen through the windows of time, and stained glass windows....

Do as the man did, not by what others later tell you to do. Don't be BeHoldEn to dogma created in all religions by power hungry men decades and centuries later to usurp power, to legally steal money from poor believers, and to kill others, in the name of messengers of peace.

25 Years!

I left Pakistan early on the morning of the 19th, for my first flight into Europe, my first trip abroad, landing in Europe on April 19, 1987. It was an incredible April to June trip.

I promised I would return, and I did, visiting France, and Spain, at other times in the past few years.

But, I had not previously made it to Holland, even though I had passed through Schipol, Amsterdam, during my trip to Barcelona, Spain, (ironically with a Dutch born then GF).

By the grace of God, I took a flight that left USA on the evening of the 18th, when it was EXACTLY the same time in Pakistan EXACTLY 25 Years after my first international flight, to again travel to Europe on the same exact date as my first trip.

April 19, 1987. April 19, 2012. Exactly 25 years later, I am back to commemorate that awesome chapter in my life.

God is kind and has blessed me with an incredible journey, every step of the way, Please keep me in your prayers. May we all meet and celebrate such anniversaries another 25 years from now. Amen.

Less Weight More Smile Wait Less Waitress California - IMRAN™

SOOC Image Straight Out Of Camera!! NO editing, tweaking, cropping, of ANY, ANY kind. Only framed in Photoshop & saved image as 5.5MB JPG.

My first trip to San Francisco had been after I moved to the USA in 1989. I flew there to meet my brother who had flown in from Pakistan via Tokyo. Our plan was to meet there, and then make a trip to Los Angeles with my old Lahore neighbor, friend, partner in my Internet business and co-founder of the .PK Internet email system, Ashar Nisar who had moved to the Silicon Valley area the same year.

During that trip we drove to LA but took the fastest highway routes. Over the years I also flew the SFO-LAX route a few times. But, going down the famed California Pacific Coast Highway was something it took me 22 years to getting around to doing.

Making it a 2-day trip, I had a beautiful trip. {See the Big Sur photo previously posted here. }

One stop was at Stearns Wharf, in Santa Barbara, to get a late lunch.

This naturally lovely, very sweet, fun, and very service driven young waitress at a place called Longboards Grill was a delight. And in that late afternoon falling sunlight casting a glow around her light hair and face, perfectly lighting up the deck umbrellas in an explosion of colors framing the picture, it became a lovely memory of a gorgeous moment, a beautiful girl, a great trip, and a collection of gorgeous colors.

I will have to dig up the contact info she gave me to tell her this timeless photo of hers is among the very few of non-landscape/nature shots I post here. {See Cat's Eye, for example.}

Slim, slender, fit, happy, smiling, serving food quickly, she was all about being a Less Weight, More Smile, Wait Less, Waitress!

Is Pacific Ocean Big? Sur(e)! - IMRAN™

About 18 years ago, my friends based in California, and I, had taken a brief trip along the famed Pacific Coast Highway (Route 1), from San Francisco / San Jose to the towns of Carmel and Monterey.

It was a beautiful scenic drive, and a great time with friends, who, like passing time, can move into the memory drawers of life.

This year, after a hectic business trip to Santa Clara and San Jose, I changed my return flight, from San Francisco - Long Island, to a departure from Orange County, near Los Angeles.

My goal was to take a 2 day slow drive along Route 1, and get to visit a dear cousin, who had visited me with her then-brand new husband (LOL) about 12 years ago in NY, and whom I had long promised to visit.

My trip was delayed because unexpected meetings meant I could not depart from Santa Clara til about 3 PM.

That is when I actually started calling around for hotels to have another interesting twist. It was coming up on the last weekend for many families before schools started. So, there were no hotel rooms available anywhere, except for $500 or more per night.

But, I plugged away, sitting in the parking lot doing searches on my iPhone and calling around but in specific areas on the ocean route.

I was also sorely disappointed that the day of this trip was completely overcast weather in California.

I decided to head towards Irvine and Newport Beach (where my cousin and her husband and three daughters I had never met lived). My plan was to stay the night in a scenic place, which I ended up picking Cambria to be. (A lovely place, where I also got a reasonably priced, well under $200 or so compared to $500, for an only remaining room, on the ocean, with breakfast included, so it was quite a bargain at that time).

But, as I made my way down Route 1, I realized that my photography plans were pretty much foiled, both by the weather, the lateness of my departure, and a misbehaving camera.

One primary place to visit on my list had been the Big Sur area, and its rocky structures along the cliffs and hills along the Pacific Coast.

Interestingly, as I got to that area, the sun had started falling, but the clouds were lifting enough for the sun to cast a hot yellow red tinge on the rocks of Big Sur. At the same time, a contrasting fog was rolling in from the ocean just a mile or two further away.

The scene was surreal… the green trees and sandy, muddy, rocky mountainside was appearing saturated in yellow, the rocks jutting out from a darkening blue were almost overexposed looking white, while the hills just a few miles away merged into a hazy blue layer of hazier bluer mists, with the waves rolling onto the sliver of sandy beach were a beautiful combined shade of turquoise and teal.

All in all, it ended up being a unique, once in a lifetime, set of weather conditions, of a small slice of our planet worth seeing in many different lights.

Is the Pacific Ocean Big? Sure. But, at Big Sur it is just a tiny microcosm of what makes our beautiful blue planet the home not just of our living beings, but our souls that feed on the beauty of nature.

I hope you enjoyed this travel experience I am sharing. Thank you.
